6. “I’m a propane technician and route driver. I deliver propane gas to tanks during the winter and do tech work (fixing broken tanks and lines, trench work, and setting new tanks in the summer). I work 40+ hours a week, I’m home every night, get weekends off, and I make $110,000, which is more than what I made driving an 18-wheeler for the last 27 years.”

9. “I work as a board-certified ER doctor. I’ve been out of residency for seven years and out of medical school for 11. I had $404k in student loans after finally finishing residency, where I made ~$52-55k gross a year. Now, having worked as an attending with a lot of overtime, I made over $700k last year gross. Unfortunately, I lose about a third of that in taxes and pay over $3k a month for my student loans. I work hard, with lots of overtime, and only work nights. The money is nice, but we definitely don’t go into medicine for the money.”

On the positive side, I have no oversight, no sales quotas, infinite flexibility, and can continue to work as long as I choose, with a floor of flying at least 40 flight hours a month; about four or five days depending on my trips. 30. “I’m an administrative assistant for the city school district. I make $38,000 a year net pay, but due to federal, state, AND city taxes, a mandatory education retirement fund, insurance, etc. I only take home $27,000 a year.”

The breakdown is $60 on the check and $45 in employer-paid benefits, which include top-of-the-line health insurance, a pension, and two other retirement funds. All overtime is double time, and if I only work 40 hrs a week, it comes out to about $120,000 in wages. It’s $90,000 in pre-tax benefits totaling $210,000 a year. We don’t get paid for days off. No student loan, my office is the city skyline.”
